Public Speaking Advertisement.

This year, the School English Panel is hoping to enter students for the Public Speaking and Choral Speaking Competitions. First, we are going to focus on the Public Speaking competitions.

Only ONE student will be picked for Public Speaking. The competition will proceed as follows:

1) Impromptu
2) Prepared speech

For (2), it is easy. You just need to write a speech according to a topic of your choice (Please don't write about anything patriotic - it's boring. Write about teenage problems, or attitudes, etc.) After you have written your speech, hand it in to Miss Nette or me (Mdm Nurul) and we will edit it to make it spectacular. After that, all you need to do is memorize it.

(1) is a little bit tougher. Impromptu means spontan. So basically, you will be given a topic and about 10 minutes (if I'm not mistaken) to think about it. After that, you need to speak for 3 minutes about the topic. This means you need to think very fast about your points  (3 points) and be able to arrange and explain your points. For example, a topic like "The Effects of Peer Pressure on Teenagers".

What can you think about to say about the topic in 10 minutes?

See if you can come up with these short notes.

Then all you have to do is come to the front and tell the audience. "Good morning to the master of ceremony, honorable judges, trustworthy timekeeper, teachers and friends. My topic is The Effects of Peer Pressure on Teenagers. First, what is peer pressure? Peer pressure is..."

Don't worry about the impromptu part, Miss Nette and I will give you lots of practice on different topics to build your confidence. The important thing is you don't FREEZE.

If you are interested, the competition is this sometime this month. We will hold auditions to pick our representative so everyone can get a chance to try. Be confident, bila lagi nak cuba kan? Show your talent!

Audition date will be informed SOON, but if you are interested, please prepare a speech on any topic that you like, and hand it in to me or Miss Nette before Friday.
